Active members of the r/redditisland community: If you are interested in becoming part of the blogging and planning staff at the Reddit Island Project, please contact the mods at r/redditisland.

The Reddit Island project has the ambitious goal of purchasing an island and developing it as a cross between a small self-sustaining community and a tourism spot. This is not an attempt to create an independent island operating outside the law, nor is it going to be a Pirate Bay Sealand spin-off. This is about the internet as a community, coming together through social media sites, and investing a small amount of time and energy across thousands of people to create something real and tangible.

Project Status

 ...relaxed.
We're not going anywhere, we've paid our hosting fees, and the subreddit continues to hum along. The mods are still active, and will maintain the site until some enthusiastic people take the lead on project organization, or until our day jobs permit us to pursue this stuff. :)
Please do message us via mod mail in r/redditisland if you are interested in spearheading part of the project. We check our messages daily.

Reddit Island Survey

May 14, 2010 by Impudence

We've developed a survey to gain a comprehensive view of general attitudes regarding reddit island. It's an opportunity to share your visions and opinions of what we're striving for. I encourage absolutely everyone with an interest in this project to take the survey.
Take it here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/redditisland
There will be follow up questions and more targeted surveys in the future about specific facets of the island, but this should be a nice snapshot for the moment.  The survey will be up until the begining of June. If you complete the survey and entered contact information, you will be eligable for a draw where you could win a nifty reddit prize.
The more people who take it, the more accurate our information will be. Thanks for participating.

Solidifying the voting system.

Who should be able to vote?
How do we provide security from outside forces trying to game the system for teh lulz?
Should we require people to pay? If we require people to pay, how much?
How many votes should each person get?
How do we verify voting?
How many days should voting be open?

(for the record, this one will be three days. Gotta start somewhere)

IRC Meeting 05.03.10

May 4, 2010 by luuletaja

We agreed that there will be Steering Committee (SC) and they will be governed by bylaws. The moderators will be the SC, but there are options for removal and adding them, should the need arise.

We agreed that the submission system will following. OFFICIAL SUBMISSIONS along with debates/discussion will be open for a minimum of 5 days, variable periods would be announced BEFORE voting or submission begins, and opened for voting for at least 3 days, while giving the voters possibility to re-open topic after a month, given sufficient demand, written in bylaws.
The criteria for voters is subscription to the redditisland.net site at the moment, and was proposed that we set up a vote as a for raising the barrier to 10 dollar donation for legal costs and a confirmed reddit/email account.

We proposed that the second discussion shall be on the mission statement, after the voting on the criteria for membership and we formulated a proposal for it.
Reddit Island will create a resort located in the tropics, preferably with a retreat nearby, with the possibility of permanent living. The members of Reddit Island will own the organization and fund the initial cost of the island and all subsequent activities and services that it must provide in order to maintain a positive cash flow.

We created a new part of the forum, where you can vote on proposals, and state your reasons for doing so.
We discussed having island in the Panama and relevant factors and whether we would accept sharing a bigger island with other people. We felt it was not advisable and should be put on vote.
We agreed to give a overview of the moderators with a list of achievements. We postponed the questions submitted to the topic we didn't have time to discuss to the next meeting.
